About the Role

The Principal Engineer, Resident Mechanical Integration, Pre-Development will be the lead customer interface for the mechanical conceptualization, design, implementation and testing of products that enhance the audio experience of our Japan-based customers. He/she is an emerging expert that can plan, define, and propose mechanical designs with no supervision while providing direction on all mechanical aspects of early engagement with Japan OEM customers.


What You Will Do

  • Lead customer interface on the mechanical aspects of product pre-developments
  • Develop and propose advanced product designs & requirements in cooperation with the appropriate engineering disciplines and customer(s)
  • Use CATIA Version 5 CAD software at a highly skilled level to develop product concepts and designs of electronic and speaker assemblies. Create 3D models, assembly drawings and component drawings of product designs
  • Create tolerance stack-up analysis on components and vehicle mounting interfaces as needed.
  • Analyze audio system proposals and their subcomponents with consideration to:
    • Customer requirements and supplier capabilities.
    • Cost and timing to ensure manufacturability, efficiency and quality.
  • Conduct Thermal simulations
  • Utilize software tools such as FEA and mold flow analysis to confirm design integrity
  • Uses analysis techniques such as DFMEA and/or DRBRM to identify and assess design and manufacturing risks. Develops plans to validate the robustness of product designs as needed.
  • Travel to Harman customer and supplier facilities, as necessary.
  • Stay current on innovative manufacturing processes to facilitate optimal product design.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations for customer and/or internal use. 
  • Lead internal design reviews to insure that new product designs are compliant to ‘Best Practices’ and ‘Lessons Learned’.

What You Need

  • BSME, BSMET or related degree.
  • At least 6 Years’ experience in OEM automotive product design
  • At least 3 years customer-facing experience working with (or in) Japan OEMs and/or Japan Tier 1s
  • In-depth understanding of automotive product development processes
  • CATIA V5 CAD design skills or equivalent in other CAD software
  • Experience using DFMEA and/or DRBFM analytical tools
  • Experience using PLM tools such as Product Center and Team Center

What is Nice to Have

  • Advanced degree, e.g. MSME, MSMET or MBA.
  • Experience in the design and engineering of injection-molded plastic components
  • Previous audio design experience
  • Knowledge of electronics
  • Experience using analytical tools such as ANSYS or Mold Flow
  • Experience using MS Office s/w, especially Excel and PowerPoint
