About the Role
The Failure Analysis Specialist – PCBA is responsible for rapidly identifying and resolving PCBA failures impacting manufacturing yield, product reliability, and field performance in high-volume consumer products. This role focuses on rapid root-cause identification, corrective action implementation, and failure prevention to support cost, quality, and time-to-market objectives.
What You Will Do
- Perform electrical, functional, and physical failure analysis on PCBAs from production lines.
- Analyze common consumer electronics failure modes, including solder defects, component damage, ESD, handling damage, intermittent failures, and early-life failures.
- Apply structured problem-solving tools (8D, 5 Whys, Fishbone) with a strong focus on speed and effectiveness.
- Partner with Manufacturing, Process, and Test Engineering to reduce scrap, rework, and cycle time.
- Provide real-time technical support during line stops and quality escalations.
- Diagnostic & Analytical Techniques
- Electrical debug using oscilloscopes, multimeters, and logic analyzers
- ICT, FCT, and boundary scan data analysis
- Review schematics, PCB layout, Gerbers, BOMs, and test limits to support analysis.
- Drive corrective actions across design, process, test, and suppliers to prevent recurrence.
- Verify corrective actions through pilot builds, A/B testing, and yield monitoring.
- Support DFM/DFA reviews and process FMEAs to improve first-pass yield.
- Generate concise, data-driven failure analysis reports suitable for fast decision-making.
- Maintain failure mode databases and dashboards for yield, defect trends, and Pareto analysis.
- Communicate findings clearly to cross-functional and global teams.
- Support supplier quality investigations for component and PCBA-related issues.
- Evaluate the cost impact of failures and prioritize actions based on risk and business impact.
- Support component change evaluations driven by cost, availability, or lifecycle constraints.
What You Need to Be Successful
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or related field.
- 6+ years of experience in PCBA failure analysis, quality, or electronics manufacturing.
- Strong knowledge of SMT processes, soldering defects, and electronic component behavior.
- Experience working in high-volume, fast-paced manufacturing environments
- Knowledge of IPC standards (IPC-A-610, J-STD-001).
- Experience with ESD controls, early-life failure analysis, and yield optimization.
Bonus Points if You Have
- Six Sigma Green Belt or Lean Manufacturing experience.
What Makes You Eligible
- Sense of urgency and strong prioritization skills
- Data-driven decision making
- Cross-functional collaboration
