About the Role

Senior Cost & Sustainability Engineer work to achieve the profitability, sustainability and growth goals defined by the leadership strategy through a cross-functional collaborative environment with Procurement, Engineering, Customer Account Management, Manufacturing and Suppliers.


Your Team

This position will report to the Cost & Sustainability Engineering Lead and will be an individual contributor role with no direct or indirect reports.

What You Will Do

  • Utilize internal and external databases to build cost and life-cycle CO2e assessment models that will establish Design-to-Cost , CO2e reduction targets for components, modules, assemblies designed into HARMAN Automotive products
  • Drive HARMAN “best practice” cost and CO2e reference for the Harman Automotive products to a component level:
  • Review and analyze cost breakdowns from supplier quotes and understand relevant cost influent factors
  • Contribute to the technical definition and implementation of electronic system cost and CO2e modeling solutions, including the identification of analytics that enable trend data to be established
  • Develop close technical relationships with suppliers to identify best cost solutions, including emerging technologies that provide cost and CO2e improvements
  • Work with Engineering & Product Sourcing teams during the new business quoting phase to establish reference cost targets and source board
  • Active participation during negotiating events with target costing
  • Identify and drive category strategy activities to meet should cost target and best CO2e solution (based on: new supplier scouting, benchmarking, purchased part relocation – defined category strategy plan including sustainability roadmap) , alignment with cross-functional teams
  • Develop cost engineering infrastructure

What You Need

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering
  • Minimum 6 years work experience in the following areas:
    • For E(Mechanical):
      • Cost engineering of (E)/mechanical components and systems
      • VA/VE of (E)/mechanical components and systems
      • Engineering automotive (E)/mechanical components
      • Automotive procurement
      • Advanced manufacturing engineering
  • Experience with factors impacting design for CO2e improvement
  • Experience with complex components, modules, assemblies
  • Technical contribution on review the work of other cost engineers
  • Ability to solve complex technical topics through structure solutions.  Must be able to influence others to drive alignment on proposed technical solutions.
  • Ability to breakdown component costs into the constituent costs
  • Good presentation skills and demonstrated ability to effectively present complex technical topics
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills who can effectively work with all levels of a global organization
  • Experience working in a fast paced, highly measured, results focused environment
  • Experience supporting Procurement in supplier Negotiations
  • Fluency in English

What is Nice to Have

  • Master’s degree in engineering
  • Minimum 2 years work experience in developing costs models for component, modules, assemblies
  • Experience with automotive electronic systems is highly desirable, including experience selecting and/or recommending automotive grade components
  • Capability to share knowledge and best practices with teammates
  • Change Orientation: Able to adapt to changing demands and conditions
  • Experience in data analytics
